Athens


Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, dominates the Attica periphery; as one of the world's oldest cities, its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. The city with the most glorious history in the world, a city worshipped by gods and people, a magical city. The enchanting capital of Greece has always been a birthplace for civilization. It is the city where democracy was born and most of the wise men of ancient times. The most important civilization of ancient world flourished in Athens and relives through some of the world's most formidable edifices.


Athens has been continuously inhabited for at least 4,500 years. Classical Athens became the leading city of ancient Greece in the 5th century BC, with its cultural achievements laying the foundations of Western civilization. By the end of Late Antiquity the city experienced decline followed by recovery in the second half of the Middle Byzantine Period (9th-10th centuries AD), and was relatively prosperous during the Crusades, benefiting from Italian trade; after a long period of decline under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Athens re-emerged in the 19th century as the capital of the independent Greek state, and in 1896 hosted the first modern Olympic Games. In the 1920s a number of Greek refugees, expelled from Asia Minor after the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), swelled Athens' population; nevertheless it was most particularly following the World War II, and from the 1950s and 1960s, that the population of the city exploded, and Athens experienced a gradual expansion in all directions. In 1980s it became evident that smog from factories and an ever increasing fleet of automobiles, as well as a lack of adequate free space due to overcongestion, had evolved into the city's most important challenges. A series of anti-pollution measures taken by the city's authorities in the 1990s, combined with a substantial improvement of the city's infrastructure (including the Attiki Odos motorway, the expansion of the Athens Metro, and the new Athens International Airport), considerably alleviated pollution and transformed Athens into a much more functional city.


Athens has been a popular destination for travellers since antiquity. Over the past decade, the city's infrastructure and social amenities have improved, in part due to its successful bid to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The Greek Government, aided by the EU, has funded major infrastructure projects such as the state-of-the-art Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, the expansion of the Athens Metro system, and the new Attiki Odos Motorway.


Athens is home to 148 theatrical stages, more than any other city in the world, including the famous ancient Herodes Atticus Theatre, home to the Athens Festival, which runs from May to October each year. In addition to a large number of multiplexes, Athens plays host to a variety of romantic, open air garden cinemas. The city also supports a vast number of music venues, including the Athens Concert Hall, known as the "Megaron Moussikis", which attracts world-famous artists all year round.


Athens has always attracted peoples' attention. During the 2004 Olympic Games proved that, despite all the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, she never - not once - lost the talent. The return of Olympic Games to their birthplace was a great success.

Annapurna



Annapurna is a series of peaks in the Himalayas, a 55 km (34 mi)-long massif of which the highest point, Annapurna I, stands at 8091m, making it the 10th-highest summit in the world and one of the 14 "eight-thousanders". It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalayas by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri massif. (Dhaulagiri I lies 34 km west of Annapurna I.)


Annapūrṇā is a Sanskrit name which literally means "full of food" (feminine form), but is normally translated as Goddess of the Harvests. In Hinduism, Annapurna is a goddess of fertility and agriculture and an avatar of Durga.


The entire massif and surrounding area are protected within the 7,629 sq. km Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), the first and largest conservation area in Nepal, established in 1986 by the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to several world-class treks, including the Annapurna Circuit.

The Annapurna peaks are among the world's most dangerous mountains to climb, with a fatality rate of 40%.

The Annapurna Conservation Area is a well known trekking region.


There are three major trekking routes in the Annapurna region: the Jomson Trek to Jomsom and Muktinath (increasingly disturbed by a road-building project); the Annapurna Sanctuary route to Annapurna base camp; and the Annapurna Circuit, which circles the Annapurna Himal itself and includes the Jomson route. The town of Pokhara usually serves as a starting point for these treks, and is also a good starting place for other short treks of one to four days, such as routes to Ghorepani or Ghandruk.


The Mustang district, a former kingdom bordering Tibet, is also geographically a part of the Annapurna region, but treks to Mustang are subject to special restrictions.

About two-thirds of all trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible, guesthouses in the hills are plentiful, and treks here offer incredibly diverse scenery, with both high mountains and lowland villages. Also, because the entire area is inhabited, trekking in the region offers unique cultural exposure and experience.

Wolfe Creek Crater



Wolfe Creek Crater is a meteorite impact crater (astrobleme) in Western Australia. It is accessed via the Tanami Road 105 km south of the town of Halls Creek. The crater is central to the Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park.

The crater averages about 875 metres in diameter, 60 metres from rim to present crater floor and it is estimated that the meteorite that formed it had a mass of about 50,000 tonnes[3], while the age is estimated to be less than 300,000 years (Pleistocene). Small numbers of iron meteorites have been found in the vicinity of the crater, as well as larger so-called 'shale-balls', rounded objects made of iron oxide, some weighing as much as 250 kg.


The Wolfe Creek Crater in Outback Australia used to receive very little attention from travellers, the tourism industry and the media. At the moment the meteorite crater gets more publicity than any other national park in Australia.

A lot of the immense energy of the impact was instantly converted into heat. They melted, pulverised and atomised the meteorite itself and the ground underneath, deformed rocks and shot debris everywhere.

The crater that was left was probably about 120 metres deep. Over the next 300,000 years the wind gradually filled it with sand and today the Wolfe Creek crater floor is 50 to 60 metres below the rim, which rises 25 metres above the surrounding flat desert land.

Evidence of the impact, other than the crater itself of course, can be seen everywhere. Fragments of iron meteorite have been found kilometres from the crater. The western slopes of the crater and the floor are littered with more iron meteorite: rusty balls, some of them fused to the rocks.


Wolfe Creek meteorite crater was discovered during an aerial survey in 1947, and scientists have intensively studied the crater. But the Djaru Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of the area, have known the crater for thousands of years. They call it Kandimalal and have their own dreamtime story about its creation:

Two rainbow serpents formed Sturt and Wolfe Creek as they crossed the desert, and Kandimalal is the place where one of the serpents emerged from the ground.

Komodo National Park



Komodo National Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores in the Lesser Sunda islands of Indonesia. The Park belongs in the Komodo Sub-District of Manggarai District in the Province of East Nusa Tenggara.


Komodo National Park was established in 1980. The Park was also declared a World Heritage Site and A Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986.

Komodo National Park includes both land and marine areas: The islands were declared a national park to protect the endangered Komodo dragons and their environment, as well as the biodiversity of the islands. The marine park was established to protect the high diversity of marine life in the waters surrounding the islands, some of the richest on the planet.


The main islands are Komodo Island, Padar, Rinca, Gili Mota and Nusa Kode but there are many smaller islands included as well.

Komodo National Park covers 1,817 square kilometers. The islands of Komodo National Park total over 603 square kilometers (60,300 ha) and the marine waters total 1,214 square kilometers (121,400 ha).


Komodo National Park lies in the heart of “Wallacea”. The Wallacea region resulted from two continents colliding together to form a unique set of volcanic islands that contain a mixture of both Australian and Asian birds and animals.

West Komodo was probably the first to form from volcanic activity in the Jurrasic era about 130 to134 million years ago. East Komodo, along with Padar and Rinca, are younger and probably emerged in the Eocene era about 49 million years ago.

Most of Komodo island is made of masses of volcanic rock flanked by sandstone, and conglomerates of limestone, sandy shale, and clay. Eastern Komodo island, Padar and
Rinca are mainly very steep hills of limestone from fossilized coral.


Rinca and several other small islands in the Park contain red-yellow Mediterranean soil. This type of soil is vulnerable to erosion especially after rains as frequent fires expose loose soil during the dry season. Komodo and Padar as well as some of the smaller islands in the Park contain grayish-brown complex soil. This soil is a made up of several types of soil, which are also vulnerable to erosion.

The highest point in Komodo is Gunung Satalibo at 735 meters above sea level.

There are no active volcanoes in the Park although the islands are located in one of the world's most active volcanic belts. Tremors from the volcanic belt are common. The closest active volcano is Gili Banta just 10 km west of Komodo Island. Gili Banta is a submarine volcano that last erupted in 1957. Gunung Sangeang Api located northwest of Komodo Island last erupted in 1996 and is still venting from the northern peak.

In general, rivers and streams appear during the rainy season and disappear during the dry season. However, fairly extensive water sources can be found on Gunung Ara and Gunung Satalibo on Komodo and on Doro Ora in Rinca. Waterflow is dependent upon the dense forest cover in these areas. These water sources provide limited fresh water via springs and pools throughout the year on Komodo and Rinca, but the quality and size of these springs vary greatly.

Sangiran Site

One of the internationally interesting tourist place in Sragen is sangiran Site which is built in the Sangiran Dome. The Dome itself is located in the Depression of Solo in the northwest slope of mount Lawu (about 17 kilometers from Solo). The area is about 56 square kilometers which streches in three districts in Sragen Regency, namely Gemolong, Kalijambe, and Plupuh and one district in Karanganyar Regency, namely Gondangrejo. Sangiran become the most important site for the development of knowledge, such as for anthropology, and tourism as well.
Up to now, there have been fifty kinds of Hominid Fossils discovered in Sangiran. It is 65% of the discoveries of hominid fossils in Indonesia of 50% of dicoveries in the world! The total numbers of fossils discovered in Sangiran are approximately 13,809 pieces which 2,934 of them are presented in the display room and the rest 10,975 pieces are kept in the storage room. Based on the fossils discoveries, Sangiran Site become the most important pre-historic human civilization site. It is the right place to study human evoolution. The site is also the most comprehensive one in the world. Therefore, Sangiran Site is categorized as Cultural World Heritage number 593 by UNESCO on December 5, 1996 in Merida, Mexico.

The research in Sangiran was firstly conducted by German paleonthologist named G.H.R Von Koenigswald in 1930's. He trained Sangiran people how to identify and manage the fossils professionally. The research results, then, was collected in Totomarsono's house (the head of Krikilan village) until 1975. At that time, there were many visitors who came to this place and an idea to built on the 1,000 square meters area located beside the village hall of Krikilan (Balai Desa Krikilan). A new representative museum was built in 1980 to keep the discovered fossils and to give a good service to the visitors. The museum was built on 16,675 square meters area with 750 square meters main building.
